What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues, of the body including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints. Massage therapy is a clinically oriented health care option that helps alleviate the discomfort associated with every day and occupational stresses, muscular over-use and many chronic pain conditions.

What is a Registered Massage Therapist?

A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) is an individual who is registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) in accordance with the Regulated Health Professions Act and the Massage Therapy Act.

Massage therapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario. Massage therapy should only be performed by an RMT. RMT’s are primary health care professionals in Ontario.

What do Massage Therapists do?

Massage therapists are capable of providing a wide range of benefits, from helping with painful injuries to providing preventative wellness care. Most common reasons by patients for seeking massage therapy are: pain management, muscle soreness, stiffness or spasm, loss of range of motion and rehabilitation from injury. Massage therapy is useful in the management of many specific musculoskeletal conditions, especially those involving postural dysfunction or overuse injuries.

Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage is the most commonly offered massage technique, utilizing a firm or light pressure on the muscles. A variety of techniques to help alleviate tension and stress in our bodies caused by everyday activities. Working on superficial layers of muscles/tendons to release tightness. This type of massage  enhances a feeling of relief physically, mentally and emotionally.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage is mainly to target chronic muscle pain issues, such as strains, sports and non-related injuries. Gradually relaxes, lengthens and removes adhesions (scar tissue) in your muscles. Effectively removing pain and restoring your full range of mobility.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release is a set of hands on techniques performed to release the grip of restricted fascia as well as associated muscles. Fascia is a tough, fibrous connective tissue that exists throughout the body in a three-dimensional web from head to toe. Fascia surrounds everything inside our bodies. The major purpose of fascia is to allow the body to maintain its normal shape through movement. Restricted fascia results in highly inefficient movement causing changes to our posture. Fascia covers everything internally including our muscles, bones, nerves, vessels and organs.

How is Myofascial Release done?
No oil or very little is used during a Myofascial massage treatment. A massage therapist will locate areas of fascial restriction using their hands on assessment skills. Sustained pressure is applied onto the restricted tissue barrier. After 90-120 seconds the tissue will begin to change and lengthen (release). This will be felt by your therapist.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a very gentle and slow rhythmical massage technique used to assist the movement of lymphatic fluid. Lymphatic drainage massage helps drain and remove fluid from areas of congestion and swelling.  

Conditions which can benefit from lymphatic drainage include acute injuries, post-surgeries, trapped edema (swelling), lymph node removal as in cases of breast cancer.

Prenatal and Postnatal Massage

Prenatal and Postnatal Massage is a massage specifically designed for women during and after child birth. Pregnancy massage is a wonderful way to relax, increase your energy and relieve discomfort during your pregnancy. Since your body changes considerably during each trimester, a soothing nurturing massage can help you experience a positive accepting way to relieve physical and emotional tension.

For your comfort

During your massage, you will be comfortably supported with pillows or cushions.  In later pregnancy (2nd trimester) you can experience a massage supported in a side lying and seated position.

Preparing for labor

Massage can help you prepare for the birthing process by increasing your awareness of tension in your body and learning how to consciously release it. You can also practice breathing and relaxation techniques while a tender area is being massaged. The result will be increase confidence and control during labor.

Postpartum massage

In the postpartum period, it is as important to care for yourself as it is during your pregnancy. Massage can help you handle the physical demands of caring for a newborn by reducing tension and increasing energy. If you are nursing, a relaxing massage can help since tension interferes with milk letdown.  Emotionally, massage can nurture and comfort you whether or not you are experiencing postpartum “blues”.

Pediatric Massage

Massage Therapists can provide a nurturing touch to promote health and wellness for infants, children and adolescents. It’s a great alternative treatment to help manage a wide range of conditions.

Muscle Energy Technique

Muscle Energy Technique (MET), is a broad range of manual therapy techniques directed at improving musculoskeletal function or joint function. This type of therapy uses Isometric contractions to relax, lengthen muscles and normalize joint motion. This technique is performed prior to a massage treatment. MET can address all areas of the body: neck, back, lower back and pelvis.

Chair Massage

A Chair Massage, also know as seated massage, is a form of massage therapy that is performed while the client is fully clothed and positioned upright in a specialize chair.  The massage chair is designed for the client to rest forward slightly, and a cushioned face cradle supports the clients head. Arms and legs are also comfortably supported. There is no or very little use of lotion or oils used during their massage. A chair massage is a good introduction to hands on massage therapy if they are unsure if they would like this form of treatment.

Some people are uncomfortable removing clothing, so having a chair massage may be right for them. Being clothed, they can begin right away feel comfortable and at ease.

Most people are familiar with table massage where they are lying down on the table and modestly covered by a sheet and blanket. The massage therapist uses lotion or oil to work out trigger points, tension, and tight muscles.

For some people, their pain or health conditions may prevent them from being able to lie down comfortably. A chair massage can be definitely be an alternative way of still treating their symptoms and fully experience the benefits of a therapeutic massage.
